Is America an Oligarchy?

America’s history has an ongoing pattern of oligarchy. The clashes between the social classes are about an underlying issue of the rich having much more power over the poor and using it to their advantage. The British rule over America  is not the only presence of oligarchy in history, but it is certainly one to observe and analyze. “Taxation Without Representation” in the 1750s is one significant example of the British’s part in oligarchy in America. Such things have led to the revolt and rebellion of unsatisfied and coincidentally lower classed citizens. The constant repetition of these things (in history) will lead to America’s democratic values to ceasing to exist and  its transformation into an oligarchy systematic government.

Oligarchy has been an ongoing tension in America for quite some time. In the 1700s America was tied and bonded to Britain due to a trade. Therefore, the colonies relied on Britain for all practically most of their necessities such as imported goods and supplies there are no banks and very little money so the colonists use barter and credit to get the things they needed. Only then when fireworks were blown in the 1750s when Britain decided to impose taxes on a particular group of its citizens despite the citizens without giving them any actual representative to deliver their views on the taxes. Fueled with anger and hurt the citizens created a historical movement which we all know very well to be the fight for America’s independence.  Though Britain gained full control over America at the time gave them full access to pass such a taxation. The issue was the fact that the citizens didn’t have a voice in such a process that would drastically affect their lives. It was as if they couldn’t have a say in their own future. It was also the fact that not everyone was taxed, only a certain group of people were. The reasoning for the citizens revolting and pleading for the demands of more democratic values to be placed at hand in their form of government.

This correlates to our modern day society and form of government because after the American colonies proclaimed their independence from the British, they demanded and even wrote an official document we call the declaration of independence to publicize the “essential” concept on democracy being the foundation of their independence. But, today our society has seemed to forgotten the foundation of which America, an independent strong nation was built on. Barriers have been created under the government's control to prevent the people (lower and middle classes) to be heard in the court of justice. No matter how much their opinions are spread throughout the media, in the courthouse the only voices that actually matters and decision are determined by are the representative and congress in court of law. In a bbc news article, two professors (after ‘reviewing answers to 1,779 survey questions asked between 1981 and 2002 on public policy issues’) came to a conclusion that “Americans do enjoy many features central to democratic governance, such as regular elections, freedom of speech and association and a widespread (if still contested) franchise. But we believe that if policymaking is dominated by powerful business organisations and a small number of affluent Americans, then America's claims to being a democratic society are seriously threatened.”  Although, citizens have full access to their right to freedom of speech and to vote for who shall run the country, state, city.. exc. since many of the most powerful organizations, companies, and programs are ruined by many people of wealth then the commoners opinion will cease to have importance.

In a hearing on Capitol hill Huffington Post publishes on their website that Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen was asked about how a person of wealth is more influential in our politics today than a common voter, she added to her response and said “I don't know what to call our system," she added. "I prefer not to give labels, but there’s no question we’ve had the trend toward growing inequality, and I personally find it a very worrisome trend that deserves the attention of policy makers.” Who are these policy makers? Are they people of much wealth? Of course they are! This issue that is so worrisome be called to attention to all of the people that it is seriously affecting. The inevitable truth that Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen was unable to label the system and believes that it is headed in the wrong direction of inequality between its people only proves and supports the point of America losing it’s democratic touch.

No matter compromise or contract of peace is done between classes the pattern of one being higher or having more power or an influence than other will continue to exist is some type of shape or form. Although America tried to become an equal party, real democracy was never made. Real democracy will only exist if all issues between race, gender, social class … exc. is deceased. But because of the long history and repetition of continuous disruptions on such issues it has become almost impossible for mends to be completely made. America’s governmental system has always been an oligarchy, it was just hidden from the public to be fully seen.
